Todd, I did this same repair a couple years ago on my 90 Westy Syncro.... had get into the motor/spool assemble and rewrap the cable... didn't remove the cable... just manipulated it until it worked... as you are finding out this whole job was a pita... thinking of the value of my time I'd be tempted to just buy a whole new assembly if it happens again :(
