When that happened to our '88 about 2 years ago it was the idle stabilizer control unit (the one behind the right tailight). I started the van to warm up and went inside to finish my coffee. I came out about 10 mins. later to find it screaming at 5000RPM! That engine only lasted about 6 more months. Wonder if they're related. After replacing the control unit, I opened the old one to find the crispy burned electronics that many other list members have reported.
