Gary,

I had this problem on an '84 Sunroof, but it has been so long I forget exactly what I did to resolve it. The problem was at the speedometer cable connection to the speedometer. I THINK it was not seated properly or there was a hard strain on the cable. Also, I recall cleaning the end of the cable and the speedo input socket then applying some Lubriplate (light-bodied, white lithium grease used on miniature mechanisms and as an engine assembly lubricant) to the cable end and socket. You have to use lubricants carefully on mechanical instruments or you can do more harm than good. Also, if yours is a 2WD, make sure that the small c-clip is on the end of the speedometer cable at the front wheel hub.
