Colin,

The two main coolant hoses running to the radiator travel up this side of the van.. more or less... it would seem your leak is a bit far forward for the somewhat common problem (for this age of van) of the metal ends separating from the plastic tubing... but I would sure inspect these hoses.. Look right up under the van passenger side near the starter.. the water could be running forward from here. There are several other hoses that meet at a "manifold" mounted to the front side of the firewall on this side also... again further to the rear than your description would suggest... but well worth a look see.. this plastic manifold is known to be a weak point with age also.. (experience talking here..)

DO FIND a competent mechanic.... if the main coolant pipes are leaking it is a major job to replace them.... but if you blow the end off one on the road.. (experience talking here..too..!) it will be far worse than being in California where VW's rule..!!
