The rear brakes have a mechanism that is supposed to increase the distance between the brake shoes as they wear, keeping them a consistent distance from the drum. Don't know how successful this mechanism is, however.

You can still adjust the brakes manually by turning the star wheel with a brake adjusting tool through the access hole in the backing plate. Your owner's manual or a service manual has this procedure.
