I'm not sure where you live, but we just experienced pretty much the same
thing on our '88. Turns out it is related to winter and the salt on the
roads. The high tension lead from the coil to the distributor was laying
against several good grounds. There were slight worn areas in the
insulation. Add salt, and presto: short out. I repositioned the lead,
cleaned it, covered it with silicone spray, and the problem is gone. Seems
odd, but our tach did not miss a beat either. I'll be replacing the wires
soon.
