According to an article on an ABS-equipped 3.2 SyncOettinger published in the Aprill 1999 issue of English "VW Motoring":

"Two versions of the Wbx-6 were developed; a low-compression 'N' unit producing 140bhp and a more highly tuned 'S' version developing 175bhp at 5000rpm and 202lbft of torque at 3800rpm. Both engines were based on the standard 2.1 litre (four-cylinder) Wasserboxer engine, with the same bore and stroke of 94 and 76mm respectively, but with the crankshaft, crankcase...totally reengineered... With the capacity enlarged by exactly 50 percent, the engine finally ended up with a displacement of 3164... Later on there was also a long-stroke big-bore (82x98mm) version, resulting in a capacity of no less than 3.7 litres and developing 180bhp at 4800rpm, but with a monstrous 226 lbft of torque at 3700rpm... Even with these kind (sic) of power outputs, performance of the Caravelle wasn't exactly sensational; after all, with a vehicle of this size, weight and poor aerodynamic efficiency, it would take incredible amounts of power to even approach the performance, say, of a Golf GTi 16V, although the ordinary 8V had better watch out at the traffic lights..."

I am told that Oettinger sixes are still available in Belgium, at $5000-15000US!! For an engine that comes with all of the familiar chronic VW Wasserboxer problems, excepting the crank.

Hence the need for a Jap-market EJ20 turbo or EJ33! Or a Porsche wasserboxer, if you want to spend far too much for no gain in power or reliability.
