I think both set-ups will give you about equal light - I can't say for 100% as I have never driven with a SA set installed.

My only concern with the SA setup is getting replacement lights. The outer lights are more than likely the $40 a pair H4s that you can get at NAPA but what about the center lights? In the past I had a Jetta with the four round headlights. The grille was made by Carello and not Hella - so getting a replacement center light was impossible. Something to look into????

I sell ( and have in stock ) the European Hella H4 lights for your 1990. The price including shipping is $320 USD and that price includes shipping. The kit consists of everything you need to do the installation:

1986 to 1992 Vanagon Outer Light Kit [ Rectangular Lights ] Hella Hi & Lo Beam Rectangular H4 Lights with Park Lamps - Each kit comes with two H4 light shells (outer lights), two Hella 55/60W H4 lamps, park light holder, 5W park lamp, weather boots, H4 lamp sockets and installation instructions.

If you break one of these lights, I have replacements or you can put one of your old ones back in until a replacement arrives. A replacement shell costs $140 USD. I also have the Lexan headlight covers for $40 USD that will protect your lights from stones and other nasty things like that.

Good luck with your decision and let me know if you have any questions.

I just took our 90 Pop Top Multi Van up skiing the other day. Six people and all of our gear. It was a little slow on the steep parts, but not painfully so. Anyway the lighting is so pathetic that I may end up doing something sooner rather than later. Between the South African set up and the European set up which puts out more light? I am under the impression that they are both similar in cost. About $300 for the South African and about $350 for the European set up? Do they both use easily replaceable over the counter H4 bulbs? I like the looks of the South African grill a little better and it would save me some cash. I am leaning a little bit that way. We live in a small town east of Portland OR and a lot of our driving is on unlit freeways. When I turn the highbeams off it is almost like turning the lights off. It is not that bad in the city or town, but on the way to the mountain or cruising down highway 84 into Portland it is just flat dangerous. Especially in driving snow or dense fog where using the brights makes it really hard to see. thanks again for all the help, Craig the Gorge VW club 1990 Multi Van (just turned 50,000 after road tripping to Seattle and back for the holidays.)
