Subject: Won't Start, 1984 Vanagon
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

On a cold morning, with no previous problems, I tried to start my 1984 1.9, and it fired like it wanted to start, then with repeated attempts, it fired a couple of times, but did not start.

Years ago, the spring loaded "door" in the air box stuck shut on a cold morning, producing similar starting problems, so I checked it and it was fine.

Next, I put in new spark plugs, and checked compression. By then the battery was nearly dead, and all four cylinders measured low, around 50lbs. each.

I still have not been able to get it to start. Now, with jump start attempts, every once in awhile it fires like it wants to start.

Anyone have any troubleshooting ideas?

Any multimeter tests you would recommend I check first?

Thanks, Scott 1984 Vanagon GL Boise, ID
