Regarding the second edited Dopplekabine photo -- dual rear axles -- why not use that to solve the chronic lack of power in these vehicles? Put in a second engine and transaxle to drive the other pair of rear wheels! Second engine goes ahead of the center axle, and flip the ring gear in the tranxaxle so the wheels turn the right direction. Granted, routing the shift linkage shaft around the forward engine may pose a challenge, but it's not impossible. Has anyone actually done that with a Vanagon or Bus?
