Hi Volks,

Whatever suits your fancy on this airfilter deal. K&N is favored by some as it offers increased performance albeit a major hassel in cleaning oiling refitting. T'ain't cheap either. If you're looking for the cheap as opposed to highest filtration solution AND you do dirt (roads, generally dusty climate etc.) The paper filter is the way to go. With the syncro you have a swirl chamber baffle and a high-off-the-ground intake to minimize the particulates to start with. I can't speak for the other vanagons.

ASME (mechanical engineering society) did a study years ago for diesel air filters for earthmoving equipment. They found the best is a folded treated paper system FOLLOWED by an oil bath system (a la aircooled bugs) AND regular maintenance. They rated the filtration properties of the K&N oiled foam type as poor. They were not concerned with HP/MPG only with preventative maintenance.

My friend Tim ran his Norton 650 with birdsucker AMAL GP carburettors in Lubbock TX for many years. No filter at all. Did it ruin the Dunstall motor? Nope. Did the compression decline, yep. Had to do a top end after 48000miles or so. Unusual? Nope. Wise? Nope.

I'd rather not do a top end due to wear and I'll stick with paper filters and carry a spare for those Burr Trail days when you start missing the horizon. Change em often and Bill, don't forget to empty the swirl box.

pensioner (waiting for bob or god whichever comes first)
