After an exaustive search of the archive, I failed to find any discussion or
(much) advice for the Vanagaon owner that is not 100% comfortable with
maintaining a converted engine.  I'm pretty competent when working on most
of my van, but if I decide to put a Golf/Jetta or Subaru engine in, I would
feel a little bit better knowing that a mechanic will work on it in case I
get stuck somewhere. Does anyone recommend a conversion to someone who can't
fix every single nook and cranny of their van on their own?  Has anyone kept
a list of Vanagon mechanics that will work on conversions?  I believe I read
somewhere that mechanics are more likely to work on conversions with other
VW engines... does anyone have a comment on this? (I suppose it really
depends on the mechanic, but any advice would be great).  Thanks to all.
