Bill,

I'd be real interested in seeing some of these places you take your Syncro -- especially when you fill the cyclone chamber with dirt and rocks!! For applications like this (and the Paris-Dakar rally where drivers are very concerned about breaking down in places that would re-define 'nowhere' for most of us) K&N and a number of other manufacturers make sand filters to fit over the outside of the filter to work as a first line of defense.

Wouldn't be to convenient for me with my city-bound 2wd but could work for a dirt bashing Syncro except that economics start to horn in. With the K&N filter costing $40+ and a prefilter costing $? and both needing frequent cleaning a stock system may be best for you.

I still plan on collecting on K&N's million mile guarantee in another 989,000 miles:)

But.... I doubt you take your BMW to the dusty, dirty, sandy, washed out

dirt 4WD roads that I take my Syncro....

If I didn't go off pavement I'd consider a K&N filter, but I really question

their use for off road unless you just don't care about longevity of your

engine.
