Something to think about though -- could you have heated that nut enough to ruin the temper? I don't know what that temperature is, unfortunately, but it might be worth checking into. That's a fairly special nut and VW changed to it when they increased the torque spec by more than 50% (the old nuts had six slots instead of ten). david
