Dear Bill Davidson, For some, it is common practice when discussing front wheel drive vehicles to refer to the way in which the engine is mounted as either "North-South", as is the case with the VW Passat I (Dasher in USA), Passat II and Santana (or Quantum in USA), and the current Passat, or mounted across the car "East-West", as is the case with the VW Lupo, Polo, Caddy, Golf, Jetta, Vento, Bora , T4 Transporter (Eurovan in USA) and the Brazilian Gol, Parati and Saviero (Pointer in Mexico). Perhaps, I should have used the terms "longitudinal" and "transverse"? Anyway, happy VW motoring !!
