Steve, Step one: remove the distributor cap Step two: remove the rotor Step three: remove the black plastic protective cover over the hall unit (if it's there) Step four: look closely at the rim of the distributor. At about 2 o'clock you should find a line stamped into the rim. That's where #1 *should* be. If it's not at 2 o'clock, don't worry about it. Where ever the line is is where #1 should be. Step five: reinstall cover and rotor Step six: turn engine by hand until rotor is aligned with mark on rim of distributor Step seven: install distributor cap Step eight: verify that wire from terminal adjacent to where rotor is pointing goes to the front right hand spark plug Step nine: verify that wires are as follows: going CCW around distributor cap, rear right hand cylinder, front left hand cylinder, rear left hand cylinder. If the above is correct, your firing order is correct. Firing order: 1, 4, 3, 2. The distributor turns CW when the engine is running so, as you can see, if you trace everything as if the distributor turned backwards the firing order becomes 1, 2, 3, 4. Real easy to remember!
