Perhaps Chris' description says it all when he said "affectionately called..." I looked through the 87 & 89 dealer brochures including the Wolfsburg insert. I could not find any use of the word "Weekender" in there. They simply refer to that rear bench as the seat which folds into a bed. What Chris calls a "Westy Weekender" is referred to as the "Base Camper". Maybe it's another made-up word like "WESTY".

Since we're on the topic on making up names I thought of a nice non-aggressive name for one of my Vanagons -- Atilla the Van.
