Every door lock has a key code on it. Your VW dealer will generally make you a key from that code for about $5. Check all of the door locks; each handle comes off in about one minute with the removal of 1-2 screws. Get a key made for each lock that has a different key code (unless they are all the same). If any of them happens to use the same key as the ignition switch (somewhat likely given that at one time, everything took the same key), then you will now have a working ignition key and will not have to drill out your ignition lock at all.
