Actually gravity-powered drains are not totally affected by coriolis effect (it's NOT a force) and can rotate either way. Yes, even in the northern hemisphere. try it...you'll see both directions of rotation. The smaller the vortex, the more chaotic motion has an effect. Hurricanes ALWAYS rotate in a certain direction. Tornadoes normally do, but exceptions occur. Whirlpools readily spin ambidextrously. Serious.
