BTDT. My '85GL Westy will blink, but the temp indicator will NOT rise. On my '84 non-GL 7 passenger, the temperature indicator will rise along with the light blinking.

I believe the difference is the speedo/tach type of instrument panel which is (I believe) normal in the GL version.

On the other hand, I have four fingers and a thumb.
