Pr (pre-rack) canoists just invert the canoe over a couple of old army blankets, cushions etc. and strap it down for 'n aft and diagonally. I also have the coleman kit with foam blocks, but seldom used the wimpy poly rope. Nylon webbing works well. I built a cradle of scraps for my single scull and placed it on a used aluminum tube rack. solid. BOL George W in nearly frozen Grand Rapids.
