Thank you to all who responded for all of the info and help. The consensus is just tie it on at the ends with padding underneath.

Frank Condelli however has perfected westy canoe carrying to an art (his post is on the list) and I expect I will incorporate his helpful innovations into my set-up. Thanks for sharing your inventions, Frank!

BTW, the best time to buy a canoe is winter time. I got a great deal on a new canoe used only once. steve
