Subject: Importing Vanagon from Canada to US
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi all,

I am considering importing a Westfalia from Canada to the US. I have searched the archives, and they are a little vague as to the process. Here is the understanding I have. I need a certificate of Conformity confirming that this particular Vanagon meets EPA, NHSTA,DOT etc. regulations. I need to pay a duty of about 3% of book value, and show a bill of sale. Now the Certificate of Conformity says that the odometer must read in miles, and the brake warning light must have BRAKE written on it. Is this something that can be switched out at home, or does the deler have to do it, or does someone certified have to do it? Some of the posts in the archive say a Canadian dealer has to do this.

Secondly, the Certificate of Conformity says that the camping equipment does not meet some sort of fire regulations in 8 states, including Colorado. I have heard that it may be possible to remove the few items that do not conform, thereby allowing me to register the van in CO.

If anyone out there has gone through this process or can shed any light on the situation it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.

Cory
