You can tow a lot with very little. Stopping is the issue!

When I was first experimenting with the I4 conversions I used a 1979 Audi Fox motor to power my Syncro this was a 1.5L "EH" engine with 71hp and 73ft/lbs of torque - you could measure 0 - 60 with a desk calendar! I towed a 1980 GTI 150km on a U-haul tow-dolly. I slowed down quite a bit on the hills, but on the flats it was perfect. It was down right scary stopping as there were no brakes on the tow-dolly.

Since then I have towed cars (Golfs and Rabbits) with a 1.8L (105hp) and 2.0L (130hp) and I have managed quite well - obviously the 130hp is the way to go. Just get some cross drilled brakes to help you stop. Also, I think the Vanagon is rated 500kg towing with no brakes on the trailer and 1400kg with brakes.

Ahoy there fellow Listees! Im thinking about towing a 15ft powerboat with 140HP outboard. How much towing capactity would i have if i convert my engine to 120HP I4 Golf motor? Is this not a good idea?
