And a fine mess it is, too. ;-)
OK..there is a way to set the timing..it requires tools you likely don't have
.(VW 2068a?) It's spelled out in the Bentley book ..no big deal..just plan on
doing the timing in the bus.
Pump levers..there is a "slot" in the end of the pump lever shaft..you marked
the lever in relation to that slot...didn't you?....Oh.....Hmmmm
Well...it's going to take a bit of trial and error..you MAY have it about
right...if you can't make "high idle" or it's too fast for "low idle" with
the stop screws all the way in, then you will have to shift the lever on the
splines..
As for there being some sort of "magic" about the pump to engine
relationship? don't worry about it..use the timing spec FOR THE CAR THE PUMP
CAME OFF OF and you'll be OK..I'd use the bus pump unless it's known to be
bad..
Removing pulley..tap two thickish screwdrivers under the edge of the
pulley..you don't want to bend anything, but you DO want to put a bit of
tension on the thing...run the shaft nut even with the end of the shaft (to
protect it) and tap the shaft/nut with a small hammer...pump in little pieces
on the ground? I said TAP!
The pulley will "donk" right off..don't lose the woodruff key!.
You COULD heat and bend the aim and make the Quantum pump fit..but really
it's SOO easy to "dress up" the car engine to fit the van, why bother?
Oh..take this opertuity to replace the two "impossible" glow plugs...
If you are going whole hog, have the local pump shop replace the end
seal..you can do it yourself but normally they pop 'em in for the retail
price of the seal...
new timing belt, new idler...if you are going to use the van pump housing,
pull the pump and check for erosion..they vans turn so fast and run so hot
that they cavitate in the back of the housing and will eat right
through..really...
