Brian, I've been following the options for new engines for several years now and I've not seen anything clearly worked out as an option for a vanagon with an automatic. When I'm going 70mph the engine is doing 4000rpm. I wouldn't feel comfortable with an inline four golf constantly running that high. If you have a manual the new south african golf engine seems to be working O.K. Don't expect to take it to a VW dealer though. If I were going to replace my engine "again" (did it through the VW the first time) I'd probably buy from Boston Bob.
