Hi folks,

Bought an '84 Vanagon GL last week that's been sitting in the woods for the last 4 years in northern Ohio - for almost free.

Bought all of the tune-up parts, and almost anything rubber (fuel lines, vacuum lines, new injector seals, etc.) I put a new battery in it last weekend and the electrical system works, the engine is not tied up, I plan on changing the oil & filter, draining the gas tank & fuel lines - also replacing the fuel filter & putting in fresh fuel, draining, and flushing & refilling the coolant system & checking for leaks. Spark plugs, rotor & cap will also be replaced and the timing reset (if it starts - which I'm confidant it will).

I've worked on the VW air cooled engines for almost 20 years now but I'm new to the water cooled Wasserboxer engine. I love VW's so you can't frighten me away, but I will laugh at any humorous advice & take it that way. Some people do not understand, but I do.

I am quite aware of the cylinder head corrossion/gasket problems, and in fact this van was parked for that very same reason. When I get it running I will assess how bad the leak is, and as to whether I will have it towed the 60 miles to home, or drive it (I have AAA Plus).

Can anyone think of anything else I may have over-looked while gearing up to bring the girl back to life?

Michael
