Semantics...the 2.1 sensor is mounted at the input end of the big steel can that houses the catalytic converter itself, which is made of ceramic. I could surmise that they put it there because that was the farthest they could get it from the engine (therefore better gas mixing?) without putting it *after* the cat, which would not work. The sensor for the 2.1l has an internal heater which means that it's not dependent on the hot exhaust stream to keep it working; therefore it doesn't *have to* be right up close to the heads. There may be another reason(s) why they put it there, I'm just guessing about the gas mixing.
