I think the majority of the fuel line failures could possibly be linked to failed fuel regulators. If this item fails, your line pressure can go way up and blow off any marginal lines. My '86 regulator failed (plugged?) and blew off the hose that clamps on to the plastic line that runs from the pump back to the firewall. It was spraying gasoline all over the starter as I was trying to restart the engine! If the regulator is working correctly, you should only have around 30 psi on these lines--not really that high. Certainly replace the old fuel lines, but don't forget the pressure regulator.
