Bob,
The I4 engines are more than capable of running at 4000RPM all day long.
The I4 that is in my VW Iltis is running at 4500RPM at 65MPH!  Redline on
these engines are 5800 RPM and I have put the tach needle past E on the fuel
gauge a few times!

I've been following the options for new engines for several years now and
I've
not seen anything clearly worked out as an option for a vanagon with an
automatic. When I'm going 70mph the engine is doing 4000rpm. I wouldn't feel
comfortable with an inline four golf constantly running that high.

If you have a manual the new south african golf engine seems to be working
O.K.
Don't expect to take it to a VW dealer though. If I were going to replace my
engine "again" (did it through the VW the first time) I'd probably buy from
Boston Bob.
