Dear Russell,

Six months ago I had exactly the same symptoms with my 1992 Syncro which has an MV
series 2.1 litre Digifant engine.  I knew there was no serious problem because the
coolant level was good and the temperature was normal..

I replaced the coolant level warning light switch at the top of the coolant
expansion tank (see page 19.13 in the 1991 Bentley manual).  It was an incredibly
easy and simple job to do and it cured the problem.  The switch cost me AU$37 (or
US$20) and the part number was VW-251919372A.  However, if your's is a 1985 or
earlier model, it will probably have a DH series 1.9 litre Digifant engine in
which case the part number is most likely different and the switch slightly
different, too.  However, it is still an easy job.
