David, You must remember where the writer lives (Australia). I live in the Western US, and experienced the same problem during the energy crisis of the 70's. We were used to cruising on the Interstates at 80-90mph, except in Montana and Nevada, where there were no daytime limits. Then we'd let it out a bit. When the 55mph limit went into effect, and we only drove 65-70, it WAS quite difficult staying awake on the long runs. I suspect Andrew lives in the more open parts of his country. I'm sure you don't have the same problem when you must stay awake for all the traffic, cops, etc. Keep in mind, we have some counties out here about the size of New England, with maybe 75,000 people in them.
