There is one sizable plain, which Christchurch sits on. Takes a couple of hours to drive the length of.

There are a few old volcanoes in the South I but mostly this island is composed of sedimentary or metamorphic rocks. The North I has more volcanics, with several active or dormant volcanoes and geothermal areas.
