I used to think crossing the border back into the US was at least more unpleasant. Crossing into Canada, the officials are very nice and hassle you not at all. Until last Spring, anyway, where Customs Canada officials felt that my desire to see Winnipeg was "suspicious" and they ripped apart my car at the I-29/Manitoba 75 crossing. I was heartbroken, my opinion of Canada was severely damaged for a while. To add insult to injury, they mistakenly kept my passport, and I didn't realize it until I was about 20km up the highway. I had to turn around, go back through US Customs and then back again through the Customs Canada to retrieve it.
