Indirect lighting of car instruments is an awful idea. Backlighting is great; why VW didn't use it in Vanagons (or at least in the later-model instruments) is beyond me. The only other car I know of which used indirect lighting was the Australian Holden Kingswood/Belmont/Premier/Monaro series from 1973 or so. Yuck!!

I guess however it leaves the option of fitting alternative lighting... UV anyone?
