Hmmm...dunno. I have never looked under a waserboxer-powered Vanagon! The only 2 I HAVE looked under (they're THAT rare here) is my GM V6-powered one and one with a straight 5 (probably a South African bus, it was very flashy and tidy, perhaps even new).

Stainless would probably be best, or mild steel. Doesn't need much clearance... some motorcycles have heatshields only about 1cm from the pipe surface. Any shielding at all should help.
