The Schraeder valve is the standard arrangement used on automotive tires; like the cigarette-lighter socket it's been generalized to other things (A/C systems, FI systems etc.) because it's cheap and available and it works. Bicyclists who use "sew-up" tires will be familiar with the other tire valve, the Presta. If it was ever used for cars it was before my time...
