Subject: '84 GL still in the woods
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

For those folks that were interested and offered helpful advice, Joel, Chris, Zoran, Greg & Kenneth, and for all others:

The '84 GL is still sitting in the woods. I evicted the mice & squirrels, blew out what was left of their 4 yr food supply & left overs (three paper sacks of pignut hickory shells) from the engine compartment, and proceeded to inspect & replace various tune-up parts in preparation for starting this fine machine. Replaced the hose from the coolant tank valve to the overflow tank, and a coolant jump-over/bleed hose on top of the engine. Both were German braid and were replaced with the same. It seems that the braid is preffered by picky mice & squirrels alike, as those were the ones gnawed upon. They didn't touch the braided vaccuum lines, however.

The show-stopper for starting the van came when I found that the eight band clamps & end-cap clamps on the fuel injection manifolds disintegrated while running my hands around them to see if they had any integrity left...they didn't.

Other than that, the wiring harnesses are in tact with no signs of rodent activity.

One question...When one opens the doors; front side or rear, are there any interior lights that are supposed to come on? The two in the rear come on when I move the switches on them, but don't seem to be connected to the doors in any way. On my Beetle, there was a three position switch on the dome light. The Vanagon lights appear the same, but don't seem to operate the same.

Thanks all

Michael
