The H4's are the flat lens European style headlights with replaceable bulbs with various wattage. They also have a better reflector design (the good ones anyway). Not to be confused with the H5's which look the same but will only accept DOT dictated wattage bulbs. The US round Vanagon headlights are sealed beams. Swapping to H4's, though technically illegal in the US, is a popular way get improved lighting.
