I had a similar problem. Turned out to be a brake shoe which came off the pivot points. Brakes worked fine except there is an occasional LOUD clunk as I drive along. The shoe would bind usually after the parking brake is used. They gradually reach the point of release. Then immediately "pop" when it gets past the pivot. Changed the damaged shoes and hardware.
