You will get as many different opinions on this as you get answers.  My
personal opinion is that the 1.6NA is acceptable for a passenger van.  For
the camper, I lean toward the 1.6TD or 1.9 (with or without turbo).  It
seems like 1.6NA engines are plentiful, but the TD versions get snapped up
before the cars even make it to the salvage yards.  I have three engines,
1.6NA, 1.6TD, 1.9NA and have driven my campers with all three.  On flat
ground, the 1.6NA does just fine.  Hills are an exercise in patience.

New to the list.  Recently purchased a '82 Diesel sunroof vanagon with the
1.6na diesel.  The engine has a questionable lower end problem, so it's
replacement time. I'm looking for advice from a experienced diesel vanagon
on what engine to replace it with, (1.6na, 1.6td, 1.9na) and who to buy it
from.  I drive and maintain several other VW diesels, but this is my first
vanagon. TIA
