<< paid good money to have a VW mechanic discover that a T2 091 (Bay 4-speed) is almost totally incompatible with a T3 094 (5-speed). Well DUH! <grin> He told me two of the gears might be swappable but nothing else. Don't know how good a mechanic he was. Very, it seems

I don't know about the 091/1 T3 4-speed though... >> The 091 in the air cooled vans is internally (gears and shafts) the same as the 76 and later bus. there are differences and if anyone NEEDS to know I'll spend the time to outline them. To transfer the 'guts" you need special tools and a press..NOT the stuff that most VW people have. AND you have to pull TWO transmissions apart....Now a really cheap SOB like, oh ME or instance, who has the tools and no sense, will make such a conversion... NORMAL people will pony up for a good rebuilt and be done with it..
