Ed,

Opening a hydraulic system can be like the children's storybook "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie". If you have never had the pleasure of reading this a hundred times, it goes something like this: If you give a mouse a cookie, he will want a glass of milk. If you give him a glass of milk, he will want a straw. If you give him a straw, he will want . . . It goes on like that for about 30 pages until the entire house is turned upside down.

Although it is frequently ignored in automotive garages, cleanliness is next to Godliness whenever a hydraulic system needs to be opened. Dirt entering the system or sediment within the system which is dislodged can cause all manner of problems. If I were you, I would remove the reservoir, after first cleaning the connections, and flush at least a gallon (2 would be better) of new fluid through the system while turning the steering wheel lock to lock. Of course, whatever you use as a reservoir for the flush must be perfectly clean. The spent fluid cannot be used again. Then wash out the reservoir well enough that you would not hesitate to drink from it and fill your system. From my experience, the system is self-bleeding and working the steering wheel purges the air.

With some luck you will have flushed out any caa-caa which may have been causing the noise.

Rich
