Subject: Tire chains or Tire cables?

After last night's storm(29 inches overnight) I'm thinking about traction.

Any northerners have opinions on chains vs. cables?

My impression is that chains may give better traction but tear up the wheel well if they break. Cables seem to be a safer option, maybe with a little loss of effectiveness. Cost is similar here at the local snowplow-parts shop.

Thanks in advance,
