I had trouble with mine, not shifting into third gear. Bought a rebuild kit, that has everything, including the clutches, seals and o-rings. Because I didn't follow the Bentley, a friend that helped me told me he had done it before, and we didn't pull the differential. So out it went to be rebuilt, is very simple actually, and when it was finished, we went to install the thing, it wouldn't go in. So, my friend tried real hard and mounted it, I started the van, and nothing happened. So, out it came, this time I lowered EVERYTHING, and took it back, explained what happened, and it resulted on a lot of internals destroyed. I found a used tranny, for cheap, from an Audi, and whatever was needed was used. All this transmissions are the same inside, the kit is the same for VW,Audi and some Porsches. Well, as the story goes, it failed again, the one way clutch was destroyed because one or two parts were assembled backwards, and it had to be repaired again. This time I located another friend of mine, but this guy knows about VWs and transmissions, and he's a licensed mechanic. He repaired the thing on top of a small table, at my house, in two afternoons. I took the converter to have it flushed, and all is well since then. Cost of all this, with both labor and parts, less than 1k, that's for both repairs together. Sorry for the length, but I hope this helps for something. Hector, 1990 carat
