When I changed my CV boots on my 87 Syncro (still stuck in Flagstaff Arizona but that is another long story!) last spring the inners both had the boots with the metal piece on the inner side. The outers where both attached on both sides with large band clamp affairs. The shafts actually look much like those on Golfs and Jettas. The outers were also made of a white somewhat translucent plastic which from what I gathered from a mechanic friend of mine last many times longer then the black rubber inner boots.
