Subject: Differences of early/late caliper mounts
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this on the list, so I forward the following.

Part of a message from German member Raimund Feussner (talking about adaptor kits for Porsche brakes):

>The old calipers donīt fit onto newer spindles because the mounting holes >differ. Additionally, the old calipers require a rotor with a different >offset than the newer ones. >Thatīs why the older brakes cannot be combined with newer spindles or vice >versa. The stubaxle is the same! So the problem with >porsche brakes would not be the spindle, but the caliper adaptor because of >the differing mounting holes on new/old spindles! >I attached a pic where you can see this. >When I tested different brakes on my ī92 Vanagon, I tried ī84 rotors with >bearings on my new vanagon, they fit! So do the newer rotors on the old >vanagon. >You only canīt use this configuration because the calipers canīt be >exchanged.

This means a South African ventilated disc unit would fit onto the stubaxle, but the caliper wouldn't line up.
