If ti's never been used, there's no telling what kind of smells you might get out of it, but you might be talking about a burned propane smell. > > How hot should the outside vent get? Mine is only mildly warm.

You may get some discussion on this point, but I never turn mine off when travellling, except to refill the propane tank. Due to the configuration of the vent, some folks fridges tend to blow out at hiway speeds. So far (knowck on wood) this hasn't been a problem for me.
