Subject: Right-side head removal,2.1L
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Found out why my '87 was making a horrendous banging sound: the rocker arm for cylinder 2's exhaust valve broke at the screw hole. Removing the rocker arm assembly was impossible, as the broken arm's jagged end caught on the valve guide/spring. As gentle persuasion didn't loosen the arm, I resorted to tapping the pushrod end. This finally loosened the arm, and subsequently the valve springs went poioioioing out of the head. The valve guide is also sticking out of the head.

After peering thru the Bentley book, in addition to trying to glean clues from the Haynes and Chilton aircooled books (OK OK, but at least they have procedures in them), it's looking more and more like I'll have to pull the right-side head. SO, I have some questions:

1. Do I REALLY have to pull the head to put the valve crap back together?

2. To pull the right head, what do I need to disconnect besides the air filter assembly, exhaust manifolds, pushrod covers, coolant hoses, and fuel rails?

3. Do I need VW tool #**@#$%&!~& ?

Once again, thanks! Sam
