Hello all, I am new to the Vanagon list, but some of you may know me from Wet Westies or the type 2 list, I have been on both for years. Anyway, I found myself in need of a new Van when my 71 Westy met the rear of a Toyota. I got a hot tip from a Wet Westies member and it turns out I will be getting an 85 Vanagon Westy Multi Van. I have a few questions about it. It is all stock and has an Automatic. The engine runs, but has high mileage so will need attention someday soon. I like the thought of doing the Golf/Jetta conversion but I have not seen kits that allow for the Auto. Was there ever a Diesel Vanagon with Auto? I could use the trans from that and just change the final drive, right?(ring and pinion) I have seen, and riden in Robert Weezers 82 Westy. It started life as a Diesel and now has a 2.0L Jetta engine in it. I was impressed, but his was a 4 speed. Is there an inexpencive kit to allow you to connect an Auto Vanagon to the I-4 VW engines? What about the Subaru? If this is not possiblee, then how long to the rebuilt engines last in these if you use the right anti-freeze and take care of it? I have stacks of air cooled engines sitting in my shop and have put many miles on AC VW's, but never have owned a H2O Vanagon. This is new to me. Anyway, thanks in advance. Any info would help. And if you need any aircoold parts, look me up.
